Sensational successes at the Junior European Championship

Photo: Grande Nation: France is the most successful team by far at the Junior European Championships.

This year, the Junior European Championships held in Schwechat (Austria) are clearly dominated by highly motivated TIBHAR players and teams.
As expected, TIBHAR’s longstanding partner FFTT whose junior team has been unbeaten since 2008 shows a high performance at this tournament. The French players secure the Cadet Team title and, moreover, win with the junior team for the fifth consecutive time.
Can Akkuzu and Audrey Zarif take the title in mixed doubles for „la Grande Nation“. In Singles, Alexandre Cassin wins the Cadet title, and Tristan Flore can defend his junior title. In the end, France is the most successful nation of this European Championship with not less than 15 medals on the whole. The team’s pre-eminence is out of question: at the junior tournament in singles, it is certain before the semi-final that the winner will be French.

After a deficit of 1:3 in the seventh set, Tristan Flore can still turn the tide and wins this last set with 11:9 against his fellow-countryman Simon Gauzy. Thus he defends the title he already won the previous year – a performance which has only been achieved by 5 other young talents so far including the table tennis legends Vladimir Samsonov, Timo Boll and Jan-Ove Waldner.
A young lady can make history this year although she is not among the outstanding French team: The Romanian Bernadette Szocs wins the Youth girls‘ title in Singles and thus gains her eleventh medal at the Junior European Championships. This victory makes her the most successful female player ever at the European Championships!
